Competency 6

The top layer of the lithosphere is the crust.

A sudden movement of the earth’s crust id an earthquake.

Remains of animals or plants trapped in any rock layer.

The middle, semi-solid layer of the earth is the mantle.

The center of the earth is the core.

Rock formed from the mantle’s melted rock is igneous.

Rock formed by layers of sediments cemented together an ocean floors is sedimentary.

New land formed at a river’s mouth by deposition is the delta.

The process of moving weathered rock and soil is erosion.

Sandstone heated and pressed is medimorphic.

The process that breaks down and changes rock is weathering.

One of the features that makes up the earth’s surface is landforms.

Questions:

The layer that surrounds  the earth and protects it from too much sunlight is what?C/atmosphere

Earth’s lakes, rivers, and oceans ore part of the what?B/hydrosphere

People build homes, cities, and farms on the what?B/lithosphere

Mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes may occur when one plate what?D/pushes against another plate

Scientist say that the earth’s plates what?C/slowly move

During the rock cycle, rocks what?D/erode

Between the crust and the core is the what?A/mantle

A natural nonliving solid with a definite chemical makeup is called what?C/mineral

Competency 3(long sheet)

PG.49
Living things pass their traits down to their offspring. Offspring often look like their parents, but sometimes an organism will look nothing like it’s parents. Does that mean that something has gone wrong? Not necessarily. It means that different genes are shoeing up in the offspring. A gene  is the basic unit of heredity. Genes contribute to everything about an organism, from the flower color in a plant to the fur color of a kitten.
Each parent contributes one gene. Genes can be dominant or recessive. If both parents contribute a dominant gene, then that trait will show, or be expressed, in the offspring. If one parent gives a dominant gene and the other gives a recessive gene, the  dominant gene will show; the recessive gene will be suppressed. If both parents contribute recessive genes, then the recessive trait will show in the offspring. Some traits are not inherited. They are learned by the organism.
Hannah and Lucas can roll their tongues. Their mother can, too, but their father can’t. The ability to roll your tongue is a:A/learned trait
A recessive trait will only show if:J/D/two recessive genes are present
What do all living things have in common with their offspring?:B/they are the same species
 Traits are:J/D/none of the above
PG.50
A baby sea is rescued and brought to an aquarium. The aquarium workers do not need to teach the baby seal to swim, but they do need to teach it to hunt. Why?:B/they do not like to hunt
One example of a learned behavior is the ability to:H/C/read
Fish are born knowing how to swim. This is an example of an:A/inherited
Baby Kabil cries when he wants food. This is an example of an:A/inherited
Andrea’s parents can both play the piano. When Andrea grows up, will she know how to play the piano? Why or why not? Not, because it is an learned trait.
PG. 51
A family of birds lives on a tree branch. A family of worms lives in the soil under the tree. Te birds and the worms are part of the same what? D/ecosystem
Which is an example of a nonliving part of an ecosystem? G/B/soil
What basic need do worms fill for birds? B/food
A small forest is bulldozed and replaced with a housing development. What might the animals and birds that had lived in the forest ecosystem do? G/B/find a new home
What is one way in which the plants in an ecosystem might help the animals? The photosynthesis and respiration.
Describe an ecosystem you have seen. What are some living parts? What are some nonliving parts? L: trees, animals, birds, amphibians, mammals NL: water, dirt, sand, salt mixed with sand
PG.52
1) How do animals get energy from the sun? B/by making food in process called photosynthesis

2) A goat eats grass. Which is true about he goat and the grass? D/the goat is a consumer and the grass is a producer

3) What is the relationship between the consumer and the producer? B/the consumer eats the producer

4) A decomposer is an organism that breaks down dead organisms and turns them into nutrients.

5) Which of the following is a producer? C/a sun flower

6) Which of the following is a consumer? C/a squirrel

7) Which shows the movement of energy through an ecosystem? A/sun—producer—consumer—decomposer

PG.53

1) What does the wolf eat? D/deer, mice, skunks, raccoons

2) What does the deer eat? B/grass

3) Which of the following organisms depends on grass for food? D/all of the above

4) Which of the following organisms is NOT prey to the skunk? A/deer

5) If the population of raccoons fell rapidly, which animal would experience an increase in population? Mice

6) If the population of wolves increased rapidly, which animals would experience a decrease? Explain why. Deer, mice, skunks, and raccoons because more wolves would eat them.

PG.54

1) The population of a species of animals in an area includes all the members of that species.

2) One year, the population of snowshoe hares in Alaska Park increased greatly. Over the next few years, what will probably happen to the population of the lynx, the hare’s major predator? C/it will stay the same no matter how many hares there are

3) Three hundred Dall sheep live on a mountain. The winter is harsh and very snowy. What will probably happen to the sheep population during the winter? B/it will probably decrease do to the weather.

4) Which of the following factors limit the size of a population? A/ the amount of the habitat

5) The population of white-tailed deer in the United States has increased. What could be a reason? D/all of the above

6) Scientist in Massachusetts hopes to increase the population of an endangered shorebird, the piping plover. The plover nests on the sand on beaches. Which action could the scientist take to increase the population of wild plovers? A/limit people;s acces to the beach so the plovers will be safe
